Brave T.O. Training Tips

Canadian Tire Brave T.O. is less than one month away! There’s no better time to make the most of the remainder of the summer weather and prepare for the big day with the Official Brave T.O. Training Tips!

1)     Mix Up Your Cardio Routine

Switch up your normal cardio routine with something completely different at least once a week. This doesn’t mean trading in time on the treadmill for stationary bikes and stair climbers. Toronto is home to over 1,500 parks equipped with baseball diamonds, sports fields, tennis courts, outdoor fitness equipment, beaches and bike trails! Need some ideas? Try practicing your swing and pull-ups on some monkey bars at a park, running on the beach, or try weighted sprints. The more variety you incorporate into your fitness routine, the better prepared you will be to tackle the fiercest of obstacle courses!

 

2)    Eat Right

Treat your taste buds to in-season watermelon, peaches, berries, cucumbers, green beans, eggplant or summer squash. When you’re exercising, you need to replenish your body with proper nutrients and minerals; it doesn’t hurt that they taste delicious this time of year! Make sure you’re also eating plenty of whole grain carbohydrates and lean protein, which can also be found fresh throughout the summer at local Toronto Farmers’ Markets. Lastly, make sure you’re not skipping a hearty breakfast on race day! It’s important to eat lots of carbs so you’re body has energy to run, climb, carry, and swing, just ensure you leave enough time to digest!

 

3)    Dress the Part

Summer is a great time to revamp your exercise gear, but when you’re participating in an obstacle course race, you’re going to want to go for comfort over style. At Canadian Tire Brave T.O. you might get a little wet, a little dirty, and a lot sweaty, so it’s best to wear moisture wicking fabrics and running shoes that have a good tread for keeping grip. Although we will provide you with a free Brave T.O. t-shirt, it’s a great idea to keep comfort in mind when picking out team themes or group costumes. Neon is strongly encouraged!

 

4)    Start Drinking More Water

Health experts often recommend drinking two to three litres of water per day, but if you’re outside often and exercising more than usual, you should be drinking more. Purchase a trendy stainless steel or plastic bottle and start taking it with you everywhere; the more you like the look of your water bottle the likelier you’ll drink from it. Have an old water bottle sitting around? Use a marker or tape to mark how much water you’d like to drink by certain times throughout the day, this way you can gauge if you need to play catch up or if you are right on track with your goals.

 

5)    Train With A Team

A team environment is a great alternative for solo competitors or first-timers to foster a positive mindset and leave you feeling more confident come race day. Don’t have a team for Canadian Tire Brave T.O. yet? Get your friends, family or coworkers involved! With five different race waves, there are challenges for participants of ALL fitness levels! Obstacle races aren’t meant to be super competitive, they are a great way to challenge and test your own mental and physical capabilities. Teammates are a great source of motivation on days when you lack the energy to train, and on race day when you think you can’t hurdle that last wall or pull that giant tire. Your teammates will be there to show you that you CAN!

 

6)   Join the TPASC Outdoor Bootcamp Series

All Brave T.O. registrants are eligible for a summer TPASC membership from July 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017, just head to the service desk with your proof of registration and get your special rate! The Bootcamp Series will allow you to train among other Brave T.O. participants and give you the chance to practice on some of the obstacles you will conquer on race day! Not only does this pass get you access to the Outdoor Bootcamp Series, it gives you full access to TPASC’s facilities including the state of the art fitness centre, other group fitness classes, the Olympic-sized pool, and rock-climbing wall.
